Day 2: Stops Along I-40
Our first stop on our SW tour was off of Route 66, Walnut Canyon National Park. We spent an hour hiking amongst some old Cliff Dwellings. It was pretty amazing to see these places, where people used to live, up close. Then it was on to Meteor City (where there's a big meteor crater that we didn't stop to see.) Loved the kitchiness of the roadside tourist traps on the old Route 66. We then made our way to Winslow, AZ. There was one intersection that had "Standing on the corner" signs (made popular by the Eagles song, "Take it Easy".) So of course, we had to play along... see pictures #45 and 47 of 103. "I was standing on a corner in Winslow, AZ and such a fine sight to see. It's a girl, my lord, in White Rav 4 (HA!) slowin' down to take a look at me!" We ate lunch at "Casa Blanca"... I had the best tamales EVER! We hit the road and made our way to the Petrified Forest, seeing beautiful and colorful landscape. Our stopping point for the night was Albuquerque, NM, which was a welcome sight to see after a very long day.
